Retired Grand Traverse County Sheriff’s Deputy Rick Csapo was found guilty of assaulting his wife on a downtown street. So the story goes, he shoved his wife into some glass during a public argument. Csapo denied the allegations and had a few choice words for the police who came to investigate the scene. Even so, the police couldn’t arrest a fellow brother in blue, and they let Csapo go on his merry way until young passersby had a problem with what they witnessed and made reports. The jury deliberated for only 35 minutes before finding Csapo guilty. He served three days in jail.
Fellow commissioner Ralph Soffredine called the situation “unfortunate.” For those of you trying to understand the tangled web we weave, this was about five years before Soffredine’s son crashed a car drunk and got his law enforcement buddies to drive him home.
